Global water consumption is doubling at a rate that is more than twice the rate of population growth. Fresh water is a finite and precious resource which has - in recent years- largely been taken for granted.

Our natural water systems are polluted - on a daily basis - by just about every aspect of our modern lifestyles. This pollution originates not only from farming and industry, but also from all aspects of the urban environment.

Much of the water entering the aquatic ecosystem is only partly processed or - all too often - not processed at all.

This nutrient rich polluted water ends up in lakes, reservoirs, ponds and rivers and can then result in eutrophication, often harmful algal blooms or high levels of pathogenic bacteria.
